Websites to find new music for licensing
Before the age of the internet, music consumers were relying on radio, personal music endorsements from music publishers and relationship among established songwriters in order to find new music.
It is a bit tedious process because if you are looking for really great and new music, you need to go out of your office and talk to people. For example if you are a recording producer looking for fresh artist or music to produce, you need to see new artists performing in music clubs and festivals.
While most listeners rely on the radio, most of the music are already produced and established, making music licensing very expensive. Of course, it is costly to license established materials.
Independent music is not popular during that time and most of the music publishers are either accepting new music from the songwriters based on their raw cassette recording and hand-written music sheets. These writers or the first generation of “indie” artists is completely unknown to the public because they are behind the music scene.
Now that the internet becomes one of the most popular sources of information, you can tap its power to search for new music.
Below are the following good suggestions that can help you find new music in the internet:
1.) Use search engines like Google (www.google.com). Then in the search box you can either type keywords that relate to new music:
For example, say if you are looking for material to license for your film. You can search in Google: “license new music for film”.
You may not found it in the first round of searches, but I suggest tweaking your keywords until you find a more relevant results.
2.) Myspace music is also a great way to find new music created by independent artists and established artists. To search new music in myspace, I suggest doing the following:
a.) The easiest way to search new music is to use their charts.
b.) You can also use their search box for this. You can search songs by genre (rock, pop, country, etc).
3.) If you are looking for free songs that you can download, of course this website (www.musicforlicense.net) has lots of songs that you can check out. You can either choose to use our music commercially or just for plain listening purposes.
4.) One of the other websites that lets you download free songs and even connect to the independent artists is Broadjam. Their free song page is: http://www.broadjam.com/browse/songs/free/index.php
One advantage of using is that it is entirely an independent music place. With this advantage, you can find new music and license it at a much lower costs compared to licensing music from the established artists.
There are still a lot of music websites for independent artists whom you can find new music for licensing; however those websites above are my most recommended.
